Training»

Realization of importance of Human Resource Development in general and technical skill for forest resources assessment in particular led to the creation of training unit in 1981. With the advancement in the information technology, GIS and GPS technologies, the states are in need of officers working at different levels to develop appreciation and practical knowledge of use of these subjects in the field of forest resource management.

 
There is an urgent need for a dedicated cadre of officers capable of handling the technologies of resource inventory and mapping and who can develop GIS packages to suit specific needs of forest management. Therefore, Govt. of India has decided to gradually build up such a cadre of forestry personnel in all the states by conducting training courses in these fields. So far, FSI has imparted training to around 1800 personnel. The courses are organized at Dehradun. Occasionally however, training courses on GPS are organized in the states based on specific requests of State Forest Departments.

The Forest Survey of India is equipped with modern infrastructure and skilled professionals to organize the training programmes. The Training Unit has advanced Digital Image Processing and GIS software like Erdas Imagine, Geo media Professional, PC Arc Info and Arc GIS. The National Forest Data Management Centre (with Digital Cartographic System & advanced GIS facilities) and
 
the Forest Inventory Unit,with their specialized activities cater to the specific needs of imparting trainings in special spheres. The training unit has Handheld (Etrex & GPS 12 of Garmin) & Differential GPS (Geo explorer 3 of Trimble) units in sufficient number to enable the trainees to have sufficient hands on practice on these units. Lectures, practicals, discussions and field visits are organized in the training modules.
   
 

Accommodation»

Accommodation is provided in the Training Hostel (Vanavaran Bhavan) located in FSI HQ campus. The training hostel has been constructed on an area of 1444 sq.m. The state of art double storeyed building is equipped with single and double AC rooms, lounge, conference hall and community dining hall with kitchen.
   
 
Fee & Expenses»

There is no course fee for the participants sponsored by the States/UT Forest Departments. The salary, traveling expenses etc. of the participants during the training are borne by the concerned Forest Departments. FSI bears the boarding and lodging expenses of the participants attending the training courses.
   
 
Customized Training Courses»

Forest Survey of India on special request from institutes/ organizations may organize specialized training courses for personnel of these institutes/organizations on a project basis.
